VCP ADVISORY SUPPORTS EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT WITH PEEKAPAK CURRICULUM
Advisory Teachers Use Research-Proven Content To Help Students Thrive Through Mental Wellness

More than 450 Victory College Prep 7-12 School students build social-emotional skills weekly through the VCP Advisory Program with support from the Peekapak Secondary School curriculum.

VCP Advisory classes meet daily starting in Grade 7 and through the senior year of high school, offering students an opportunity to thrive through social-emotional learning that develops skills to support stronger academic performance and college and career readiness.

“I think Peekapak does a very good job of saying here’s the skills you have and can develop, and here’s how those translate into college, here’s how you translate those into a career,” says Gabrielle Nave, VCP Grade 12 Advisory Teacher and College Transitions Coordinator. “And then they are saying, now that we have these tools, now that we have these handouts and information, how does this apply to the fact that we have to make decisions?”

The Peekapak approach to social-emotional learning is unique because it teaches beyond the typical emotional learning content, which only centers on risk prevention, to emphasize ‘positive youth development’ or PYD.

“Peekapak helps me relax after I come in from a different, long, hard class,” says Zaiden Bitner, Grade 10 student. “It lets me focus and get back on task with the things that I need to get done.”

“It definitely opens up my mind,” adds Darby Martinez, Grade 11 student. “It helps me see how others might think about something, and it is great to have a safe space for students where everyone can talk about their opinions or how they may feel.”
