VCP COMMUNITY GARDEN CREATES SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
SPACE MADE POSSIBLE BY INDIANA THRIVING SCHOOLS GRANT AWARDS
One of the most unique learning spaces on the Victory College Prep campus is home to chickens, insects of every kind, and dozens of plant species, including many producing fresh fruit and vegetables.
As nature develops around them in the VCP Community Garden, VCP students develop a better understanding of the environment and human impacts on our climate; realize the importance of access to fresh foods when 1 in 7 Indiana residents face food insecurity; and experience the restorative power of the outdoors in a collaborative space.
The VCP Community Garden is sustained through grant awards from Earth Charter Indiana received through its Indiana Thriving Schools Challenge (ITSC). In the fall of 2022, ITSC secured additional garden funding when it helped VCP become the featured fundraising recipient of the Green Festival in Cumberland, Ind., outside of Indianapolis, which will support the installation of a new pergola in the garden.
The VCP Community Garden is cared for by students with project leadership provided by the leaders of the K-6 School Green Team and members of the VCP faculty and staff.
The VCP Community Garden has also received funding support from Whole Foods Garden Grants, an Herb Society Grant, and an Annie’s Grants for Gardens.
